Named after Palamedes. The Greeks said he invented numbers to bring order to the camp at Troy. We use them to bring order to your taxes.

You don't have to understand Bulgarian bureaucracy. You only have to approve what we prepare.
PalaUp runs the monthly tax and bookkeeping routine for freelancers in Bulgaria. Each month it works out your VAT, social security and income tax from your invoices and bank statement, fills in the forms, and files them once you approve.
No Bulgarian needed. Every form is explained in English, with its official Bulgarian name beside it for when you talk to НАП or an accountant.
What a 97a freelancer files, month by month
- Social security return (Декларация обр. 1), due by the 25th: 12 a year
- VAT return (Справка-декларация), due by the 14th: 12 a year
- EU sales list (VIES-декларация), due by the 14th: 12 a year
- Advance income tax (чл. 55 ЗДДФЛ), due end of Apr · Jul · Oct: 3 a year
- Annual tax return (ГДД чл. 50), due by 30 April: 1 a year
- 40 filings a year. 12 approvals with PalaUp.
Counted for a freelancer registered under Art. 97a who invoices EU clients every month. The payments that go with these filings are not counted.
01The problem
What one invoice to a client in Berlin sets in motion
You send the invoice in March.
By 14 April you owe a VAT return and a VIES declaration. By the 25th, Form 1 and your social security payment. By the 30th, advance tax for the first quarter and last year's annual return. That is five deadlines in sixteen days, each on a different page of a portal written in Bulgarian.
14 Apr · 14 Apr · 25 Apr · 30 Apr · 30 Apr
The portal says „Справка-декларация“ and you open a translator.
It comes back as “reference declaration”, which tells you nothing. It is the VAT return. The usual way out is an accountant at €60–80 a month. Much of the monthly work for one freelancer is filings that repeat the same way, which is the part software can prepare.
€720–960 a year
One month, the VIES declaration slips.
The invoice went out and the client paid, but nothing was filed for that month. A missing VAT return or VIES declaration is fined on its own, even when the VAT due is zero, and late social security payments collect interest from the first day.
The fine applies at €0 of VAT due.
02How it works
What happens each month
The rules are finite: a fixed set of forms, dates and formulas. That makes the routine a job for software, and the checking a job for you.
You snap an invoice or receipt, and PalaUp reads it.
AI pulls out the supplier, VAT number, date, amounts and VAT rate, files the document in the right ledger and matches it to the payment in your bank statement. You only confirm what it isn't sure about. Issuing invoices with the right reverse-charge wording works in PalaUp too.
PalaUp calculates and fills in the forms.
VAT, social security and income tax come from those numbers. The VAT return, VIES declaration, Form 1 and payment orders are filled in, each in English with the Bulgarian form name beside it.
You check the numbers and decide.
One screen shows every amount and due date, and each amount opens to show how it was calculated. Nothing reaches НАП until you approve. When you do, PalaUp files it.
What you should know before trusting it
- Your НАП access stays yours.
- You don't hand over your password or your electronic signature.
- You stay legally responsible.
- The taxpayer answers for what is filed in their name, with software or with an accountant. That is why you see every calculation before you approve.
- Your data stays in the EU.
- Invoices and bank data will be stored on servers in the EU.

Questions people ask first
Do I need to speak Bulgarian?
No. The product, the monthly summary and support are in English. The forms are filed in Bulgarian because НАП requires it, so PalaUp fills them in and shows you an English reading of every line, next to the official name.
Do I need a qualified electronic signature (КЕП)?
Yes, once a year. With your КЕП you request an API key in НАП's portal and paste it into PalaUp; we walk you through it step by step. After that, PalaUp files on its own once you approve. Don't have a КЕП or would rather not deal with it? You can authorise us with a power of attorney instead, and we file on your behalf.
What does the AI do, and what happens to my documents?
It reads your invoices and receipts from a photo or PDF, sorts your bank transactions and flags anything unusual, such as an EU client without a valid VAT number. Every number it extracts is shown to you before anything is filed, and you can correct it. Your documents are used only to run your account; we don't use them to train AI models.
Is this legal, and who is responsible for my filings?
Preparing your own filings with software is legal. You are the taxpayer, so you are responsible for what is filed in your name, exactly as you are when an accountant files for you. PalaUp's part is to show the calculation behind every number, so that you approve something you have actually seen.
What if PalaUp makes a mistake?
You see every calculation before anything is filed, which is the first safeguard. If an error of ours gets through, we correct it and help you file the correction. Nothing is filed without your approval, so the final say stays with you. The exact terms will be in our terms of service, published before launch.
Does it work for 97a VAT registration?
Yes, it is the case we are building for first: a freelancer registered under Art. 97a ZDDS who supplies services to EU businesses under reverse charge. A general VAT registration (above the turnover threshold) works the same way each month, so it is covered too.
How is this different from other accounting apps?
It is built for small businesses in Bulgaria and starts from the case general tools handle worst: a freelancer with clients abroad. Most tools stop at a file that you download and upload to НАП yourself, while PalaUp is meant to file after you approve. And every number comes with its calculation, in English.
What if I already have an accountant?
Keep them. Nothing changes until PalaUp launches and you decide to switch. Many people will keep an accountant for the questions that need a person and let PalaUp run the monthly routine. Switching mid-year works too: you import this year's invoices and bank statements, and PalaUp picks up from the next filing.
When does it launch?
We are aiming for 2027 and have no narrower date yet. Waitlist members hear first.
